I am pleasantly surprised when two of the most in-demand people of the moment arrive at our office exactly on time, I was expecting to have to wait a while, work my way through a few cuppa’s and a pack of biscuits before I could even introduce myself to The Like. Winners of Best British Breakthrough act at the BRIT awards this year and Best Band at the Shockwaves NME awards, could they be following in the footsteps of previous indie bands such as Arctic Monkeys and become slightly more main stream as they become more and more recognised? Is this an exciting prospect for them or something to be avoided? Well, I am about to find out…
Hello! Firstly congratulations on your success with awards this year...
Lauren: Thank-you! I honestly have never been so shocked at anything in my life! It’s amazing to think that our work is being recognised and that makes it all worth it!
Tom: Hopefully there is a lot more to come!
So, are you used to people recognising you on the streets yet?
Lauren: No, it’s so weird! We can’t believe it when people come and ask us to have a photo or sign something, it’s like are you talking to the right person (laughs)?
Right, back to Music! Who are your main inspirations, past and present?
Tom: Defiantly the Beatles for past! Present I’m very into all sorts of music from anything such as indie rock to dub step. I like to keep my music taste as wide as possible because I think all of it inspires me in some way.
Lauren: Yeah I agree with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and all huge bands and artists that were around in that day. Present I have am also open for anything!
If you could work with one artist and band tomorrow, who would it be? It could be anyone?
Tom: Erm, for me it would defiantly have to be Arctic Monkeys, I think that although they have made such a huge success from their music and are seen as much more mainstream they have kept their music original.
Your new single ‘Looking Good’ has been a huge success; did you ever imagine it would be so popular?
Lauren: Oh my god no! I think that if you make the music just for it to be a success, you won’t achieve it because the music isn’t your aim. When we made the single we weren’t thinking ‘oh, this best go to Number One on every chart possible.’
Tom: Yeah, she just said it all (laughs)!
What about the album? Did you find making it was an easy process?
Tom: Not at all! It’s a lot of fun, but also a lot of hard work and hours that need to be put into making it something we are proud of!
Lauren: Yeah, also were lucky enough to have a production team that understand our taste so that makes it slightly less stressful because we’ve got them to help us out.
Are you excited for the festival season this year?
Tom & Lauren: YES!
Tom: It’s my favourite! You don’t get an atmosphere like it anywhere else!
Lauren: Same! Honestly there is nothing like playing on a festival stage! The atmosphere is amazing and also I like the fact that you can play to people who wouldn’t necessarily be into your music, so it gives you a chance to get across to them!
Lauren, you’re constantly being photographed and are fast becoming a fashion icon! How do you cope with it?!
Lauren: It’s crazy! I just get up in the morning and throw whatever’s clean on! I don’t see myself as a fashion icon at all! It’s very flattering though although when I go out looking unbelievably rough (Tom cuts in saying ‘that’s most of the time and laughs!) now though there is always some photo that comes back to haunt me (laughs)!
What about you two? You must spend practically all your time with each other is there ever any arguments!
Tom: All the time! I like to wind her up and it’s so funny when she gets mad! But were so close that we have a brother/sister relationship so there aren’t any proper arguments!
Lauren: He drives me crazy! I could kill him sometimes but we’ve been close since we were really young and have grown up with each other so were used to it now (laughs)!
The Like's self-titled album is out on monday•
