Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Straight away, from looking at the covers I produced for my preliminary task , I think it is clear that my work has improved. When we did the preliminary task I had not had experience with Photoshop and I what I completed is very minimalistic. Although the preliminary pages do not look professional, I think that the basics of my final task were already on the pages e.g. the date, barcode etc. By the time I was starting my finial drafts, I had learnt how to add backgrounds and just in general become more familiar with Photoshop, I started to use DaFont.com and found other tools to improve the overall look of my magazine.
I think that the ideas I have and the creativity that goes into making a magazine cover has improved a lot also. I feel this has improved through the use of the research I have completed, looking at such a wide range of other magazine covers have also inspired me and given me ideas. I also feel I have learned a lot more about what is expected of a successful magazine layout e.g. clarity and other magazine conventions such as model's appearances and camera angles etc.
Also, by the time I had started my finial drafts I knew more about the importance of the images on the magazine. Although on both tasks the majority of the images are mid-shot, my finial models are much more styled and 'made-up'. This is important to my magazine because for it to have a professional look, then they need to be. Similarly, I also learned more about the importance of poses that the models are in. Whereas on the preliminary task my model is simply standing there, it looks much better on the final product when the models are posing.
From the preliminary task to the final draft and finial product, I learned that the positioning of the models is very important to a magazine. On my draft, the models did not look as if they were a band and this effected how professional it looked and also my marks, when I looked further into this I think the models standing together looks a lot more professional. Also, on the front of my preliminary front cover, the model is in the left hand corner of the page, I think this was a wrong decision because it is not the first thing that is noticed and does not grab attention.
Over all, I think I have progressed a lot in the time between the two tasks. The improvement of my knowledge of Photoshop has had a big part in my magazine improving and I think that the tools I learned how to use were what make my finial piece look professional in comparison to the first task. Also, I have used a much more appropriate colour scheme and made sure that the models were positioned correctly and that camera work was used in the magazine to make more of an influence.
